A 21-year old woman was sexually assaulted while walking home near Indiana University’s campus early Monday morning after leaving a popular bar. The young lady was approached by a man pretending to need directions. She attempted to ignore the man, but that’s when he attacked her. Fortunately, the victim was armed with her personal safety spray and was prepared to defend herself.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters, "He stepped in front of her, grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the ground and attempted to remove some of her clothing,".

Ultimately, the courageous victim was able to get away and call for help after using Pepper Spray to spray her attacker into the eyes and kick him to the ground.

The victim suffered a cut on her neck and a welt on her forehead during the attack.

This attack has certainly triggered an increased level of fear and nervousness amongst students on and near campus. These crimes are appalling and no one should ever be subjected to such a frightening and traumatizing situation. I am sure this victim felt relieved that she had her Pepper Spray.

A sketch of the suspect has been released and police patrols have been increased. These efforts are definitely commendable, but since campus safety can not be everywhere at once – we have to make sure students are equipped with the tools such as Pepper Spray and the knowledge to be just as courageous and prepared as this young victim.

For all those naysayers who doubt or question the effectiveness of Pepper Spray - does this change your minds?
